Duuude, you asked if you seem bitter. You do. If dealing with deceptive NPCs is this much of a problem, you are in the entirely wrong genre of RPGs. Every modern horror game I can think of is thick with NPCs who have paranormal abilities of deception. It's more than a trope; it's a staple of the genre.
